Step 1: Understand the self-assessment activity

With Interactive Study Materials tools, instructors upload the syllabus which contains the task requirements and self-assessment rubrics, then enrich it with questions and discussions for students to respond to. To save time, instructors can use the Engagement Assistant feature in the tool (powered by AI) to create context-based open questions.Students study the syllabus closely, respond to the questions, and highlight the sections that they are unclear about.

Step 2: Clarification session

Instructors organize a synchronous clarification session where they clarify the questions regarding the syllabus, and explain the rationale behind the assessment activities for the students. Both this and the previous step allow students to have a thorough understanding of the self-assessment activity and how to do it.

Step 3: Work on the 1st draft

Based on the task requirements and insights in the previous steps, students work on the first writing draft then submit it to the Self Assessment tool.

Step 4: Self-evaluate the 1st draft

Within the tool, students analyze and reflect on their own draft based on a a set of criteria focusing on reasoning and argumentation.

Step 5: Receive personalized feedback

Instructors can also choose to add an Automated feedback on writing step, in which students receive AI-powered feedback on technical aspects of their writing, such as spelling, grammar, structure, and more. This further helps students to improve their work later on.

Step 6: Instructors’ feedback

Instructors provide feedback on students’ writing and their self-evaluation. Thanks to the Automated feedback stage, instructors can have more time to emphasize higher order aspects of students’ writing, such as reasoning or argumentation. At the same time, providing students with feedback on their reflection will help guide them in delivering quality self evaluation later on.

Step 7: Final submission
