Team-based learning (TBL) is a learning method, popularized by Larry Michaelsen. Team-based learning is based around three core modules: preparation, in-class readiness testing, and application exercises.
Classic implementation of TBL follows a rhythm of the three core modules above, but aspects of TBL, such as the in-class readiness can also be applied outside the standard structure and lead to positive outcomes for students.
If you want to read more on the TBL method, check out this handout from the Team Based Learning Collaborative. Two use cases from our partner institutions using this approach are also attached below.
In this activity:
- You can create multiple choice questions, students will first answer that set of questions individually, and the correct answers will not be revealed to them.
- Afterwards they complete the same set of questions, but this time in a group, discussing and selecting the correct answers together. This encourages students to think more deeply about their responses, and allows them to learn from their peers, fostering a collaborative environment between them.
- After the group quiz, students will see their results both from the individual quiz and the group quiz.
